I generated variants and that seemed to work.

It still says admin has disabled the product.

The message in itsself could be significatnly improved as it's giving you incorrect information.  

Any ideas what else it could be?  Do I need to set something in the variant for it to work?

There are generally two reasons that can cause that error:

  1. No variants generated for a variant-based product
  2. No proper menu item for the product

In your case you hit the jackpot with both items at the same time.

Your new product was in the uncategorized category so:

    • moved your new product into the Store category
    • viola! product detail page now works

 

I agree, that error notification is terrible and needs to be updated.
